Paper, tools, the amount of water and the application influence how dry kratom leaf powder is distributed and how its tone appears after drying. The material is offered exclusively for creative experiments in the studio; it is not a ready-to-use paint.
Kratom leaf powder mainly shows sage, olive, khaki and earth tones. Green, Red, White and Gold structure our range for creative purposes and are not a promise of a corresponding powder colour. The sample on the chosen surface therefore remains the most important reference.
Paper: the surface plays its part
Base colour, texture and absorbency alter the impression. Light, smoother paper reveals differences differently from a rough, warm-white sheet. For a comparison, first use only one type of paper.
We are an official Hahnemühle reseller and stock selected artist papers from the brand. Suitability depends on the technique and the manufacturer's instructions. Studio Sets contain only the paper specified in the product description for the respective set.
Brushes: shape and size define the mark
For our studio range, we stock da Vinci brushes. Round brushes are suitable for small areas, flat brushes for broad edges, rigger brushes for fine marks, and angled brushes for controlled accents. Use the same tool for comparison fields and clean it according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Water: distribute, do not permanently bind
A small amount of leaf powder can be moistened with water and worked into a paste. Water disperses the fine particles but does not fully dissolve them. After evaporation, it also does not permanently bind the material to the paper. A water sample shows tone, grain, distribution and brush marks, but is not a promise of rub resistance or permanent adhesion.
There is no universally applicable mixing ratio. Begin with a few drops, add gradually and record the observation. If adhesion is to be examined, a suitable artist medium may be tested on a separate field according to the manufacturer's instructions. Binders and artist media are not included in our Studio Sets.
A simple material chart
Mark fields of equal size and note product name, material code, paper, brush, date and water or medium sample. Take only a small working quantity, work with as little dust as possible and close the packaging again. A thin, a medium and a textured application show different distribution and tool marks.
Allow all fields to dry fully while lying flat. Only then assess tone, grain and edge formation under consistent lighting. Change only one variable per chart. This creates a traceable material journal.
The fixed order is: Green with SG, SGMD and GD, Red with RMD, RD and RB, White with WMD, WD and GW, and Gold with GOMD and GOD. These groups only organise the Leaf Archive; each material itself shows the visible impression.
Do not stir up loose powders; then clean work surfaces with a damp cloth and label containers clearly. For additional pigments or media, their product information and safety instructions apply.
